Here is the latest blog from acoustic wedding band Rock My Reception live in Chester at Chester Racecourse last Friday
For anyone who has had the pleasure of experiencing a day at the races, they will surely agree it’s a day of dressing up to the nines, enjoying a few beverages and soaking in every moment of the day. Well, the same can be said for Lee and Antonia Higginson’s day at Chester Racecourse, though this wasn’t for the purpose of making a flutter on the gee-gees; this was the grand venue for their wedding reception and what a choice too!
It was another first time for Rock My Reception, having never played in the beautiful city of Chester before, or for that matter, a racecourse! Upon our arrival we were greeted by hot sunshine and blue skies, which is always a bonus and luck of the draw for a wedding day and certainly showed off the city and the venue at its best.
As Lee and Antonia were big indie fans, we were particularly glad they’d booked Rock My Reception to play their evening function as, although we love playing any genre of popular music, the Indie classics are what both me and Kieran cut our teeth on as budding musicians in our teens, back in the 90’s. To be revisiting these songs is like meeting up with an old friend or putting on your favourite jacket.
As guests made their way to the evening suite, we played a few tunes as people were finding their seats. Before the partying could begin in earnest, it was time for the Groom and the Best Man to deliver their speeches. This they did with both great humour and touching warmth as Lee payed tribute to those who sadly, could not attend and also to Antonia’s children whom he’d been so proud to become part of their lives. It was then Antonia’s turn then to pay tribute to not only her friend Hayley, but also to wish Noel Gallagher many happy returns, who now has the honour of sharing his birthday with their wedding day!
A while after the speeches it was time for the couple to make there way to the dance floor. The song they’d requested was one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written; ‘Wouldn’t it be nice’ from The Beach Boys masterpiece ‘Pet Sounds’. As this was a first dance we decided to give the song more romance by pitching the key down and slowing the tempo slightly to give it a more smoochy feel. The dance floor was filled with guests joining the happy couple and these same guests hardly took a break from the dance floor all evening!
We certainly had no shortage of Indie tunes to play, from The Wannadies ‘You and Me Song’ to Cast’s ‘Walkaway’- every angle of 90’s hits were covered!
As we played the final hour we were joined by the happy couple themselves who took star turns at singing! Antonia gave a rousing version of Wonderwall and Lee got on the mic for The Courteeners ‘Not 19 Forever’. In Rock My Reception we like to get the couple involved in the proceedings wherever possible and Lee and Antonia really came to the fore in a very musical way when they both sang Oasis’s ‘Champagne Supernova’ with us. A moment we’ll never forget.
We concluded the night by playing, as an encore, the first dance, now in the records speeded up tempo and topped the night off with a medley of Hey Jude and Elbows ‘One day like this’. We also took the opportunity of having Lee and Antonia pose for a photograph with our guitars: how much more rock and roll can a wedding photo get?!!
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Lee and Antonia for not only booking rock my reception to play their Indie Wedding, but to both, them and their guests for getting up and really getting into the spirit of the occasion. Definitely Maybe the most Rock ‘n’ Roll wedding reception yet? Definitely!!!
